Švadlenky is a social enterprise project in Královéhradecky region created by Aufori, an organisation that supports people facing poverty, social exclusion and other difficult life situations. The project was born during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when many of Aufori’s clients lost their already limited sources of income. To help them earn money while also providing a useful service, Aufori bought five sewing machines and offered its clients the opportunity to work from home. Many of the people involved had lost their jobs or income because of the pandemic, for example due to long-term childcare or the termination of temporary work agreements.
In the beginning, the seamstresses made reusable fabric face masks for Aufori’s employees and clients at a time when masks were in high demand. They were paid for their work, and even this relatively small additional income helped them cover everyday expenses that they might otherwise have struggled to afford. This initiative gradually developed into the social enterprise Švadlenky. Today, the project continues to create opportunities for people who are at risk of social exclusion by allowing them to earn money through their own work and skills. One of their products is a set of highly absorbent cotton kitchen towels, made by the Švadlenky sewing workshop. The towels are sold through the Breakfaststory online shop and come in a simple gift package tied with a white ribbon. Apart from towels they produce a variety of handmade textile products, including aprons, table runners, bags, cosmetic cases, cushions, bed linen and gift sets. They also offer custom sewing and ironing services for businesses, hotels, restaurants and schools, as well as corporate gift packages.
What makes Švadlenky inspiring is that the project grew out of a difficult situation and turned it into an opportunity. Instead of simply providing financial assistance, Aufori created a way for people facing difficult circumstances to earn their own income, use their skills and become part of a meaningful working environment. Švadlenky therefore shows how a small business idea can have a real social impact.
