Coffee Mates is an innovative social and environmental enterprise based in Skopje, North Macedonia, which transforms used coffee grounds into valuable resources. It was founded by young innovators Petar Stefanovski and Nikola Vuchkov, who found out that a big amount of organic waste is generated by coffee shops, restaurants, bars and decided to do something about it.
The company aims to change the way we think about waste by turning an everyday by-product into sustainable, practical and creative products. Every day, cafés, restaurants and hotels produce large amounts of used coffee grounds, most of which are simply thrown away. Coffee Mates offers an alternative by collecting and processing this waste, helping local businesses adopt more environmentally responsible practices. Through its collection and recycling services, the company promotes a circular economy in which materials are reused rather than discarded. One of Coffee Mates’ most distinctive innovations is its eyeglass frames made from recycled coffee grounds. By combining coffee waste with biomaterials, the team has developed a lightweight and durable material that can be shaped into stylish, customisable frames. This creative approach demonstrates that sustainable products can be both environmentally friendly and modern in design. The company is also exploring other applications for coffee waste, including organic plant fertilisers.
Coffee Mates gained recognition through the Regional Incubator for Social Entrepreneurs (RISE), organised by the association ARNO, where its founders won an award for their innovative idea. Since then, the initiative has attracted interest from local coffee shops interested in collaborating and supplying their used coffee grounds. Its work helps reduce waste while showing how small changes in resource management can contribute to a more sustainable future.
Coffee Mates is an example of how entrepreneurship, creativity and environmental responsibility can come together. By giving coffee grounds a second life, the company turns an overlooked waste product into an opportunity for innovation and positive change
