Project report
The course entitled “Challenging Media Stereotypes”, which was held at Cluj-Napoca, Romania, from 16th to 22nd November 2024, was worth its weight in gold for our entire team experience. The whole aspect of media literacy was thoroughly examined by all of us, primarily through the lens of gender equality as well as inclusivity. It was learning how the media shape the views of society, yet most of all within stereotypes, and in what ways, as with youth workers, we could contend against such harmful narratives for a more inclusive society.
Some of the most significant aspects were the opportunity to discuss and analyse around stereotypes mostly caused by the media with regard to gender and cultural identities. There was a rich culture of dialogue in and out of the workshop. The workshops were very interactive, such that we were able to directly engage with the content and translate learning into practice through exercise. These sessions I particularly enjoyed, the kind when we were able to share some of our insights or strategies for tackling stereotypes in our communities.
They really did improve our learning on the subject through these practical and group-discussion-oriented activities. Role-playing and case studies were the most useful in figuring out how to bring media literacy into youth work because these will not only sharpen our skills but also help us develop into a team by creating real friendships with everyone who is coming from a different country.
Another highlight of the whole course were the trips and excursions within Cluj-Napoca. Exploring the beautiful landscape and rich culture and history of Romania was an enjoyable break from the more intense sessions and bonded us as a group.
The event was well organized and hosted by incredible individuals. They exude a sincere passion and commitment through which we are able to use tools to support us in our challenge against the condemning media stereotypes . For them, the creation of space was so welcome and inclusive where everybody was free to expose their thoughts and ideas. Their spirit was very infectious and motivated us to take this energy along with us in our work.
However, personal time and informal discussion could have added value to the course itself. The schedule was busy, which suits learning, but there were still times when we wished we could have spent more time digesting and discussing with each other the elements learned in structured format.
In summary, the course was “Challenging Media Stereotypes,” and it has been a real insightful empowerment for all of us. We left equipped with lots of lessons, skills, and much fresher ideas on how to tackle media stereotypes and enhance inclusion. We are eager to take back to our various communities these lessons where we will keep promoting critical thinking and making positive changes in the lives of young people.
